Keeping a grip on it
If gambling has stopped being an evening’s entertainment, one number is worth more than the rest of this page. GamCare answers the National Gambling Helpline at every hour of the year, ringing it costs nothing, and 0808 8020 133 reaches it off the rule sheet, claim 191. Everything below is detail underneath that sentence.
1
The helpline, and what it is actually for
Nobody has to be at the end of a crisis to use it. GamCare describes the line as support for the caller, for a friend of theirs or for somebody in their family, reachable by telephone, by live chat or over a messaging app, and a professional may put somebody in touch with it where that person agrees off the rule sheet, claim 191.
GamCare is a charity and not a trade body, separately registered in England and in Scotland off the rule sheet, claim 192, and it is neither this publisher nor funded by anything on this domain. Nothing written here was produced with it or is endorsed by it.
2
The self-exclusion scheme, and the line it stops at
One registration shuts a person out of their accounts at every participating site and app, and the scheme calls the service free, quick and easy to set up off the rule sheet, claim 178. Since November 2025 it has presented itself as Gamstop Online, under a refreshed identity and a new website, while most people searching still type the older styling off the rule sheet, claim 180.
The licence is what makes membership compulsory. A British licence to gamble online cannot be held without it off the rule sheet, claim 181, that has been the position since March 2020, and from April of that year operators had to check their customers against the register every day off the rule sheet, claim 182. Membership is therefore as wide as the licensed market and stops exactly where the licensed market stops.
That boundary is the most useful fact on this page for anybody arriving from one of the counts on this domain, and the scheme’s own terms draw it. Inside its membership an exclusion bites. Outside it, the scheme says plainly that it is in no position to keep anybody away off the rule sheet, claim 183. Read that as a gap in the cover rather than as a loophole worth exploring. A registration is a strong instrument across a large market and it was never built to cover a counter sitting outside that market.
One further distinction is easy to miss. Betting shops are handled by a separate sister scheme, founded in 2016 and part of the same group since July 2023, so a registration covering accounts online is not a registration covering premises off the rule sheet, claim 179.
3
How long a registration lasts, and why that is the point of it
The choice at registration runs from six months to five years, with the longest term renewing itself unless the renewal is turned off late on off the rule sheet, claim 184.
Two features of that make the instrument work, and both are worth knowing before signing rather than afterwards. Nothing lifts a registration before its term is up off the rule sheet, claim 185. Nor does a term simply expire: the scheme leaves an exclusion standing unless something is done about it, an extension of six months or longer can be taken instead, and leaving the whole thing alone can keep it running for years more off the rule sheet, claim 186. The terms behind all of that were revised in May 2026, on the twentieth, and the periods are the part most likely to move off the rule sheet, claim 188, so the scheme’s own pages are the thing to read rather than this one.
The inflexibility is not an oversight. A protection somebody could switch off in a bad hour would protect nobody in a bad hour, which is the whole argument for a minimum term, and it is why the consequence above is worth sitting with before a decision rather than after one.
4
Blocking software, and the route that costs nothing
Gamban is software rather than a scheme. Its own account of itself is a layered block covering tens of thousands of gambling destinations worldwide, installable under one licence on whichever devices a household uses off the rule sheet, claim 193.
Two things about paying for it need stating together, because reading either on its own gives the wrong answer. The company’s own pages offer a short free trial after registration and a free route for the residents of one American state, and they carry no British free route whatever off the rule sheet, claim 194. A free British route does exist, and it is the charity that publishes it rather than the software house: the name is TalkBanStop, it ties three things together in talking and blocking and stopping, and the charity’s own statement is that the software is free to anybody who arrives by way of the helpline, or by way of its support and treatment work off the rule sheet, claim 195.
A caution belongs with that. What stands behind the free route is one news item, published in April 2021 on the twelfth, which fixes no period at all on the free access, so no length of time and no number of devices should be read off this page as the position today off the rule sheet, claim 196. The helpline is the place to confirm what is on offer today.
5
How many people have done this already
Registration is commoner than it probably feels to somebody considering it. When the scheme last counted, in July 2026, 614,738 people were on the register, and the first half of that year had run 16 per cent ahead of the half before it off the rule sheet, claim 189. The longest term on offer was the one most of those registrants had taken off the rule sheet, claim 190, which is worth knowing by anybody who assumes the six-month option is what people reach for.
Figures of that kind are the least interesting thing on this page and they are here for one reason. Somebody wondering whether registering is an extreme step is wondering about a step that six hundred thousand people have already taken, most of them for as long as the scheme allows.
6
What this publication will not print
No page on this domain explains how to reach a counter somebody has shut themselves out of. Not by another account, not by another device, not by another road to the same place. Where a source describes such a thing, what gets printed is the consequence and the method is left where it was found. That holds whether or not a request is reasonable, because a page is read by everybody who finds it and not only by the person who asked for it.
Nor does anything here read as encouragement. The counts on this domain exist to show how much stands between a headline and a payment, and the arithmetic generally makes dull reading for anybody hoping a sequence is short. That is the intended effect and it is the opposite of a recommendation.
Every counter at the end of these sequences sits beyond any Great Britain licence, and on this page of all of them that matters more than anywhere else. A registration with the self-exclusion scheme reaches the licensed market because the licence makes it reach off the rule sheet, claim 181, so at the far end of these sequences it reaches nothing off the rule sheet, claim 183. The regulator’s warning notice of January 2025, published on the twentieth, characterises an unlicensed site as a place where the controls a licence compels may simply be absent. It also records that the people such sites make a point of pursuing are often the people who have already shut themselves out off the rule sheet, claim 130. Somebody who has registered and then finds an offer still reachable is looking at exactly that pattern, and the number at the top of this page is the right response to it.
